Wednesday! Glorious comic book day! Check out our post to see what we’re looking forward to reading this week, and let us know what you’re picking up as well.

Our pick of the week:

STK669357Saga #27
Story: Brian K. Vaughan
Art: Fiona Staples
Publisher: Image Comics

Poor Marko.

Angel

  • Rat Queens #10: I’m so glad I got into this book when I did. I’m still getting used to the new art, but the writing is still fantastic, so I’m hoping I stop comparing this to what Roc Upchurch’s work soon.
  • Saga #27: Poor Marko? No. Poor us.
  • Ant-Man #4: A bit behind on this (I still haven’t read #3), but that’s more due to the sad state of my wallet than to the quality of this book.
  • Captain Marvel #14: Black Vortex is going to suck me in no matter how hard I avoid it, isn’t it?
  • Howard the Duck #2: This book is pretty much exactly my jam. I can’t even tell you how long I had to stop reading the first issue to laugh at Spider-Man thinking Howard had died.
  • Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #12: This is a sad one for me. Unless they’re pulling yet another fake-out on us, this is the very last book of the Ultimate Universe. Ultimate X-Men #2 was the very first comic I ever bought, back at Heroescon in 2001. The Ultimate line has always been sort of a constant for me, something that I felt like I could come back to if I ever stopped reading comics for any period of time. And Miles has become pretty special to me too, ever since he was introduced. This was a great book, I wish it had been able to get the longevity that Peter’s run did, but I’m pleased with what we got. Gonna miss this book a LOT.
  • Spider-Woman #6: I recently caught up on this, and it’s been the catalyst for what’s going to be a very long New Avengers reread. I like this book, and the art in particular, a lot.

Lina

I am in incredibly far behind in my comics reading right now, however that doesn’t mean that I won’t be adding things to my list. What can I say, I’m a glutton for punishment. That said, it’s not a heavy week either! Yay!

  • Saga #27: Every solicit sends fear shooting into my dark little heart. You never know when the issue is coming that they’re just going to kill everyone and end with a giant smiley face cause the joke is on us. That’s a bit extreme, isn’t it?
  • Ody-C #4: This book is a weird happy place of mine. It’s badassery! And mythology! And space! I just want it all for always.
  • All-New Hawkeye #2: I’m not behind on this one! Which is because there is only one other issue, but it’s a small point of pride! It also doesn’t seem to be terrible so far. I need my sass in my life and while not pure Fraction glory, I will take this.
  • Captain Marvel #14: I’m sick of crossovers (which I always say and then I read them anyways cause I can’t stop), however this seems to be pushing towards more than just Secret Wars. Hopefully? Either way I love Carol so I’m down. Even if it does make catching up a bit hard.
  • Storm #10: We must never let this book end. Ever. I will not stand for it.

scott2014

  • All-New Hawkeye #2 – The next A Song of Ice and Fire book will probably come out before Hawkeye #22, so it’s fortunate that All-New Hawkeye is shaping up so nicely; the contrast of the painterly flashbacks against the more cartoon-y present day stuff is effective, but there’s heart in both sections which is why it works so well.
  • Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #5: Diggin’ it, so I’ll be kind of sad when it switches to Angela 1602. I’ve never been able to see AU versions as exactly the same, but maybe there’ll be some switcharoo accounting for it. In any case, Angela! Guardians of the Galaxy! I have no idea what that dynamic is really like because I’ve barely read the latter! Oops.
  • Ant-Man #4: Scott Lang’s attempts to make it continue… to be attempts, most likely.
  • Captain Marvel #14 – Caught up with Black Vortex, which I like well enough as a story. Crossover-wise, it’s kind of confusing since it keeps jumping to entirely new books, which makes it tricky to follow. It makes it come out faster, which helps – in one book it’d be going for months – but it’s like a couple of weeks ago when I just skipped All-New X-Men because I wasn’t reading the crossover. Sacrifices the momentum of the solo title to keep the momentum of the crossover. So it’s a tricky business. Anyway Secret Wars is gonna rule. (This is only vaguely related in terms of ‘they are both event like things,’ but with no Avengers book this week I had to get in my ‘Secret Wars is gonna rule’ somewhere.)
  • Howard the Duck #2 – I don’t entirely get Howard the Duck, like, conceptually, as a thing, like I don’t entirely know what this book is about beyond… you know, duck, world he didn’t make or what-have-you. But it’s funny, so, here I am again.
  • Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #12 – This won’t be the last we see of Miles Morales, given Ultimate End is coming up and he’s poised to be a big part of Secret Wars (is gonna rule) (wow that was a way more natural spot). But his supporting cast, his place in this particular universe, which is gonna blow up in Secret Wars/Ultimate End… change is coming, things won’t be the same. Might be good, might be bad, might be a mix of both. I just hope every single supporting cast member of this book makes it out and into whatever his new place in the universe is, y’know?
  • ODY-C #4 – I don’t know if it’s a mark for or against this that it doesn’t seem to be monthly. Too frequently and I might drop it as a case of ‘wtf is going on.’ But infrequently might not assist in following. Conundrums.
  • Rat Queens #10 – Still haven’t quite adjusted to the new art, still haven’t processed that this is Rat Queens now. It’s good art, but with books like these they tend to have a consistent look, and when it changes… it’s an adjustment. That had to be made, obviously, but it’s gonna take me a bit to get as full-on Rat Queens as I once was.
  • Saga #27 – Solicit: “Poor Marko.” Poor us, more like, weeping forever at Space Family Tragedies.

…what a crowded week this is for me. I’m gonna be reading for days.
